9th Grade Louis XIV Essay Assignment

Hey 9th graders:

Remember that your assignment to write an essay about Louis XIV's time in power is due next Tuesday!

You had your choice of essay assignments:
  1. You have been asked to provide a letter of recommendation for Louis XIV. Decide whether you will recommend him for the honor (your choice) and then complete the letter. You need to have at least two 5-sentence paragraphs. Be sure to explain why you can or can't recommend him using examples from your textbook and primary source readings.
  2. Write a 10-sentence (2 paragraph) essay explaining what type of king Louis XIV was, and what the "regular" peoples' lives were like during his reign.
Have a great (long) weekend!

UPDATED: September is Ending Already?! Week of September 26-30

Hi! Did you miss me at the end of the week? ;)

I can't believe September is almost over already! This school year is flying!!

Thanks to all the students who behaved and completed their work when I was gone last week...I had a VERY wonderful and VERY short trip home at the end of last week (my husband was honored at Homecoming for an award he won when we were in high school)!

I also got to spend time with my nephews!! :)

It was also really nice to go home because Iowa is quite possibly the most beautiful place ever in the fall; it's my favorite time of the year! :)

Anyway, I digress...

Let's get back to business:

-First of all, Ms. Norma and Ms. Campbell would like to share the following information with you:
OPERA SEASON IS BACK IN TOWN!!!! This year,The Honduran Musical Foundation will stage the Opera Buffa "The Secret Marriage" by Domenico Cimarosa. Students from grades 6 - 12 will attend the presentation on Friday OCT. 7 at Manuel Bonilla Theater. Tickets already on sale at the music room with Ms. Norma López (L. 225) We will leave the school campus at 8:30 a.m. Students from grades 6-8 will returned to the school at 1:00 p.m. Students from grades 9 -12 will stop by the Identity Museum to observe the Picasso Art Exhibit (they will need to pay Ms. Campbell, L.30.00 extra to enter the Museum) and will come back to school around 1:45 p.m.

IMPORTANT DETAILS:
Students MUST wear formal clothes. (No tennis shoes or jeans are allowed, and students who are not dressed appropriately will not be able to attend, even if they have purchased a ticket!) Students must have a very good breakfast because we won't be allowed to eat at the theater or museum.

Sounds like fun to me! I know we all enjoyed it last year! Please remind your student to be on their best behavior that day; last year the conductor actually had to stop in the middle to shush students from another school because they were being quite rude and talking during the performance...let's be sure to represent Discovery School in the positive way we did last year!

-We will also be voting for the new Discovery School mascot this Friday during first period!

-MAP tests continue this week. Here's the schedule for my 6th-9th grade students (Bolded items occur during my class time):

Monday, September 26
7th grade: 8:30-9:45 (Reading)
6th grade: 10:05-11:20 (Reading)

Thursday, September 29
6th grade: 11:40-12:55 (Language Arts)
7th grade: 1:15-2:30 (Language Arts)

Friday, September 30
8A: 8:30-9:45 (Language Arts)
8B: 10:05-11:20 (Language Arts)
9th grade: 11:40-12:55 (Language Arts)

Remember: If you missed any of the tests last week, or miss any of the tests this week, you will be making them up on Tuesday, October 4th!

Be sure to eat a good breakfast and bring a big snack if your test occurs during the lunch hour, so you won't be too hungry to concentrate and do your best on these tests!

-Finally, no school on Monday, October 3! Enjoy celebrating Francisco Morazan's birthday!

Here's what we'll be up to in Room 4 this week:
6th grade: I am looking forward to looking at your culture projects during class tomorrow! Hopefully you were able to use your (3 days! of) worktime in class wisely and didn't have to spend all weekend finishing it up! ;) You will present your culture projects Monday, and we will spend the rest of the week looking at the earliest peoples who settled the Americas! (UPDATED: Quiz Alert: your Early Americans Quiz will be Tuesday, October 11!)
--

7th grade: I will meet you at the computer lab for the first part of your class tomorrow, and then we will head back down to my classroom to discuss your packets from last week. We will spend the rest of the week discussing various elements of interest about the geography of North America and will have some time to work on your American country project! These projects will be presented to the class on Monday and Tuesday, October 10-11! We will have at least 2, and hopefully 3 days of in-class worktime for these projects! (FYI: your American Countries Quiz will be Friday, October 14!)
--

8th grade: I'm very much looking forward to your Gilgamesh plays tomorrow! When you are done presenting, we will start looking at the development and culture of yet another River Valley Settlement (are you seeing a pattern here??), Ancient Egypt. I have a wealth of hands-on activities planned for the next few weeks, so I hope you are excited! (By-the-by, your Ancient River Civs Quiz (focusing mainly on Egypt and surrounding areas, but with 1-2 questions about China and India) will be Friday, October 14!)
--

9th grade: How did your preparation for your Role-Plays go? I am really excited to see what you came up first thing tomorrow morning! For the rest of the week we will be focusing on some individual Absolutist Monarchs with the hope that you will be able to really understand what Absolutism is and what it looks like (and what happens to people who are subjected to it)! We'll look at people like Louis XIV, Peter the Great, and other Absolutists! (**UPDATED: In case you're interested: your Absolutism Quiz will be Tuesday, October 11!)
--

Sounds like a great week to me!
See you soon!

7th Grade: Exam Date Change

Good morning 7th grade:

Due to some unforseen restrictions to our time this week (and the fact that you can't rush learning), I have made the decision to move the 7th grade Themes/Elements/Religions quiz back to Monday, September 12. I think this will be best for all involved.

As always, I will be putting the review questions here on the blog sometime Sunday afternoon. I suggest each student check the blog and use those questions to study.

I do allow the students to bring notes on one piece of paper, front side only, to use on my quizzes. These notes need to be written using their own words, not just a printed copy of my review questions blog post. I do walk around during the quiz time to check, and I will take away any notes which have been obviously copied.

Midterm is Friday! Week of September 5-9

Hello Everyone:

Wow! I can't believe we are at midterm of quarter 1 already! This school year is FLYING by! :)

We had a wonderful and patriotic morning this past Thursday as the whole school joined together to celebrate Honduras' Flag Day:

This next week is going to be a busy one, as work winds down for the midterm grading (progress reports will be sent out on Monday, September 19) and gears up for our Discovery School Independence Day Celebration on Tuesday, September 13. (More details to come!)

Last week was a week of projects in my room, and they are all coming due on either Monday or Tuesday. Please check with your student to make sure they have them finished and ready to turn in on the due date. Remember that in my class, 25% is deducted for the first day an assignment is late, and 50% after that. Once grades are recorded at midterm (Friday), all missing work becomes a "zero" in the gradebook and cannot be made up.

Also, please check over your students' work and ask them where they got their information. According to the school's policy, plagiarism, or the direct copying of someone else's work (especially from Internet sources), is a serious offense, and will result in an automatic grade of "zero" on that assignment or project. Multiple offenses will lead to further disciplinary action. Help us stamp out plagiarism by reviewing with your students the work they have been assigned and the sources they use to complete it!

This Week's Deadlines (from last week's work)
Monday:
9th grade: French Explorer's packet, including completed map, "create," and "write" components (30 pts)

Tuesday:
6th grade: Make-a-Map Project (please double-check all rubric elements have been included. We will be presenting these maps to the 5th graders on Tuesday, so EVERYONE needs to have their maps ready on this day. Please note that the presentation is worth 10% of the project grade, and students will not have the opportunity to make those points up if their project is not complete on Tuesday. (30 pts)
8th grade: Hammurabi's Code paragraphs due (40 pts)
(apparently 7th grade had the weekend off :)

This Week's Activities
6th grade: Hopefully each of you spent some time this weekend working with the Latitude and Longitude games I posted on Friday. Remember to bring a signed note from your parents after you have spent 30 minutes or more working on these skills! The notes are due by Friday so I can give you extra credit on Friday's Maps and Charts and Graphs Quiz. In order to be ready for this quiz, we will be working with bar and line graphs and pie charts on Monday-Wednesday of this week. We will play a review game on Thursday, and will have our quiz on Friday, September 9. Remember notes are allowed on this quiz, and review questions will be posted on this blog Thursday night. It is your responsibility to prepare your own notes card, not just to copy my questions and answers from the blog.
--
7th grade: I enjoyed reading your feedback about the past two weeks' assignments, and I'm glad you enjoyed them. Overall, your quiz scores were good, but I would continue to review the 5 Themes of Geography for Friday's Themes, Elements, and Religions quiz. This week we will conduct a brief review of the 7 Elements of Culture (you should remember these from last year) and will spend the rest of the week comparing the five major world religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. We will have a review game on Thursday and the quiz on Friday, September 9. Remember notes are allowed on this quiz, and review questions will be posted on this blog Thursday night. It is your responsibility to prepare your own notes card, not just to copy my questions and answers from the blog.
--

8th grade: I hope you have been learning a lot about the laws of Ancient Mesopotamia. Not one student e-mailed, called, or BB'd me with questions this weekend, so I am making the assumption that you are not having trouble. with the assignment. Feel free to bring any questions you do have to class on Monday. We will begin the week with the end of Mesopotamia, and then have a culminating DBQ, which will hopefully complete your knowledge of this first civilization. We will have a review game on Thursday and the quiz on Friday, September 9. Remember notes are allowed on this quiz, and review questions will be posted on this blog Thursday night. It is your responsibility to prepare your own notes card, not just to copy my questions and answers from the blog.
--

9th grade: From exploration to colonization we go! On Monday we will look at the effects of the Age of Exploration on the areas of the world which were explored; the Americas, Africa, and Asia. Tuesday and Wednesday we will look at the results of this exploration and colonization, the Columbian Exchange, Triangular Trade, and slavery. We will have a review game on Friday and the quiz on Monday, September 12. Remember notes are allowed on this quiz, and review questions will be posted on this blog Sunday night. It is your responsibility to prepare your own notes card, not just to copy my questions and answers from the blog.
--

As you have probably realized, each of my classes has a quiz on Friday or next Monday. These quizzes will factor into the midterm grade, and will be part of 40% of the total class grade. Please remind your student to study, and to take advantage of my offer to use notes on their quizzes.

It will be a busy and challenging week for most students, but we will all be rewarded with fun and games at the Independence Day Celebration, and a well-deserved 3-day break on September 14-16 to celebrate Honduras' Independence Day!

I hope you all have an excellent week! Please remember that all students' grades are available online at engrade.com. Please contact me if you need you students' code for my class, or instructions on how to use engrade. (They have a great video tutorial on their home page, and you can also click here to link to my previous blog post about the engrade system.)

6th Grade: Latitude and Longitude Games!

Hey 6th graders:

After yesterday's little "review" I have realized that some of you need a bit more practice with Latitude and Longitude before next week's quiz...

So, I have compiled a small list of Latitude and Longitude games I found on the Internet here, so you can spend some time playing/reviewing.

Have your parents sign a note saying you practiced for 30 minutes or more and I will toss some extra credit your way on the quiz :)

Here are the links:
http://www.abcya.com/latitude_and_longitude_practice.htm (it starts out easy but gets harder as you go along!)
http://www.kidsgeo.com/geography-games/latitude-longitude-map-game.php (help Hannah find herself!)
http://www.purposegames.com/game/longitude-and-latitude-quiz (this is good because you have to identify continents and oceans too)
http://www.infoplease.com/p/brainpop/latitudeandlongitude.html (it's a little quiz going over concepts)

Have fun! Don't forget to bring a note from your parents once you have logged 30 minutes or more of game time!
