The Last Full Week of January?! Week of January 23-17

Hello!

Can you believe it? It's a Saturday blog post! I just happened to have some extra time on my hands, so I thought I would blog now instead of later :)

We had a really great week this past week, including the New Arrival in Room #4...the Mimio Board! I have only had it for three days, but we've already used it in every class for various activities, including a fun review game for the 8th graders...It's pretty much my favorite thing...

However, the BEST activity of the week had nothing to do with technology! As you will see soon, as part of their Imperialism unit, the 9th graders are going to spend the week watching a movie about imperialism in India which showcases a very important game of cricket...because cricket is not a game commonly played in Honduras, Mr. Victor and I brought our 1st period 9th and 7th grade classes together to learn the rules and play a bit of cricket, Honduras-style:

Doesn't that look like fun?!

As always, here are some announcements from the Discovery School Administration:
  • DPTO Fun Run: Our annual school Fun Run will take place on Saturday, January 28, beginning at 8:30 a.m. There will be the traditional run, games, and a complimentary pancake and fruit breakfast to follow. The pledge forms were sent before the Winter Holiday, however, if you would like an additional copy, please download it from the Area Administrators’ blogs
  • ROMEO TO GO - Discovery's first drama performance will take place on Friday, January 27 at 7:00 p.m. Get your tickets now! For more information, please contact Mr. Fenn at kfenn@discoveryschool.edu.hn.
  • MAP testing continues this week! Please ensure your students attend school each day this week so they will not have to make up missed MAP tests!
And here's what you have to look forward to in Room 4 (besides the Mimio :)
6th grade: This week you will finish your Age of Exploration unit! Remember that your "Explorer's Thumbs" project is due at class time on Monday. During class on Monday and Tuesday you will learn about two of the important outcomes of the Age of Exploration, the Columbian Exchange and the Triangular Trade system. On Wednesday you will watch a movie highlighting the positives and negatives of the Age of Exploration, on Thursday you will review, and Friday, January 27 will be your Age of Exploration Quiz!
--

7th grade: I hope you enjoyed your Cricket match last Friday! Remember that your Two for One packet and persuasive poster are due at class time on Monday. However, please note that you will not have class in my room on Monday, due to your MAP test. You will need to bring your packet and poster with you to the MAP test! In class on Tuesday you will be looking at the 5 Themes of Geography for the second half of the Southwest Asian countries by reading Chapter 20 and completing the 5 questions about the reading. Wednesday and Thursday you will be researching and forming opinions on the effects of the petroleum trade in Southwest Asia, and Friday will be your final presentation day of the unit. Your Southwest Asia quiz will be Tuesday, January 31.
--

8th grade: No, I haven't checked your quizzes yet (as of Saturday afternoon) but I promise I will before your classes on Tuesday. Yes, I said Tuesday...Monday you have MAP tests during my class time. On Tuesday you will get your tests back and also learn about life on a Manor in the Middle Ages (sounds fun, right?) You will also watch the first 10 minutes or so of a movie which you will continue/finish on Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday you will be building a Medieval Castle in groups of 3-4, so you will need to bring cereal boxes, Pringles cans, cardboard, anything you and your group will need to construct your castle. (Don't worry, you'll get a rubric explaining everything!)
--

9th grade: As promised, it's movie time! We will be watching (and taking notes on) the move Lagaan this week. Because we are going to be spending a lot of time on this, you may also expect it to be a large part of your Imperialism exam. Please plan to arrive promptly at school each morning, and not to miss class unless you absolutely have to. If you do miss a day of the movie, you will need to come to my room during lunch time to watch what you missed.
--

Another week practically gone...this school year is FLYING by!

Have an excellent week!
