Senior Blog Post: Due Monday, January 31

Hi Seniors:

Hopefully you are feeling pretty comfortable with the structure of a newspaper article after today's class...and you are coming up with some good ideas about what you can do for your own article.

In your blog post today I would like you to outline the who-what-when-where-why-how of the story you are writing. Then write your headline and lead paragraph, making sure to include all these elements. (If you do this, the hard part of the assignment is done...remember, nobody's going to read the rest, anyway!!)

Have a great weekend, see you next week.

Activities and Assignments: January 31-February 4

Hello again:

I can't believe it, but the 100th day of school is here! (and will probably be gone by the time you read this...)

This year is really flying by, probably due to all the stuff we're doing in class!!

Speaking of...

6th grade: Next wee you will continue looking at the colonial society of the Americas. We finished our look at the Vikings and will discuss the Spanish briefly on Monday, then move on to the English in the North American colonies. We'll talk about a little place called Jamestown and look at the charter that started it all...we'll also look at what types of people were needed in colonies like Jamestown. Wednesday you'll have a sub again (I'll be in a curriculum meeting) but you'll have some readings to investigate about the Southern Colonies. Then Thursday and Friday we will look at the Middle and New England Colonies.
--

7th grade: Next week is going to be mostly about the Tang and Song dynasties...I know I've been saying this for 2 weeks, but I promise, Monday is the day...we will start researching and looking at these two dynasties to prepare for Wednesday's debate. Thursday we'll analyze the debate, and Friday we'll start looking at the Yuan dynasty (oh those nasty Mongols!) Be preparing yourself: your quiz over Ancient China will be the following week...
--

8th grade: Monday will be your last day to work on the make-a-manor projects, and Tuesday you will present to the class. Wednesday-Thursday you will look at the Medieval ideas of inheritance laws, arranged marriages, dowries, and family alliances made purely for power reasons...I can't wait! Friday we'll have a who's who in the Medieval Catholic Church and look at the balance of power between church and state.
--

Seniors: Next week we will move from newspapers to television journalism, and I'll show you my best reporter imitation. :) We'll also keep working on the yearbook.
--

Hope everyone has a great weekend! See you next week!

7th Grade: Shang, Qin, and Han Questions

Hi 7th grade:

Please bring the answers to these questions to school on Monday...even if you don't have my class I want you to give them to me.

1. How are the Shang, Qin, and Han dynasties different from each other?

2. History happened in the past. Does this mean it can't change?

3. Did every artifact fit with the school of thought of the dynasty that created it?

4. Some dynasties lasted for hundreds of years, while others were overthrown in as little as 20 years. What do you think made the biggest difference in how long a dynasty held power?

E-mail me with questions. You may also e-mail me the answers if you don't want to bring them to school on Monday.

**UPDATED** 5-day week: January 24-28

Hello all:

Next week you can look forward to:

6th: We are going to finish the Explorers unit tomorrow (Friday) and will review on Monday for our quiz Tuesday. On Wednesday we will start looking at the direct result of the Explorations: Colonialism. We will look at the 2 first colonies in the Americas: L'Anse aux Meadows (Vikings) and the Spanish colonies in Latin America and the Caribbean. We will also take a peek at the Benedictine Monks in these colonies.
--

7th: **UPDATED** Due to the disjointed week because of MAP tests, we haven't clipped along as well as I'd like (there are a few things I need you to know about the Qin and Han Dynasties before we move along to the Tang or the Song) so I will be postponing your debate until next week so you can get all caught up. We will finish this week looking at the similarities and differences between the Shang, Zhou, Qin, and Han dynasties, the ideas of Confucius, Daoism, Legalism, and looking at what happened during the Period of Disunity and how the Sui brought China back together.
--

8th: Hopefully you are enjoying your introduction to Feudalism and Manoralism, because we will be continuing to look at this for quite a bit of time! Next week we will do something hard but worthwhile: we will be looking at a 13th century Manoral Contract! on Monday, and then get to that movie about Castles on Tuesday...on Wednesday-Friday we will be working in teams (or individually, you choose) to make our own Manors!
--

Seniors: Since you are going to be eating on Thursday we won't have class (awwwww!) but we will on Friday! We need to get cracking on the Yearbook, so we will be working on that on Friday.
--

There you have it...moving right along with this school year! (I heard an elementary teacher saying something about the 100th day of school? Wow!!)

Have a good one!

Senior Blog Post: Due Monday, January 24

Hi Seniors:

I enjoyed our discussion on libel and slander today...I hope you learned something and will use this knowledge to evaluate what you write in class and online.

As promised, your blog assignment this week is to do some research on Honduras' defamation laws...if any. Tell me •where you looked, •what laws you found (if any), •and what the laws said.

Link to any pertinent websites.

If you don't find anything after 20 minutes of looking, then look up US defamation and libel laws and answer the same questions above.

Have a great weekend! :)

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day! (Week of January 18-21)

Hello again:

Wow did that weekend go fast!! :)

Here's what you can look forward to in my class this week:

6th grade: We will continue to look at the European Explorers this week, especially the Dutch and the English. We will have 2 notes days and 2 activity days. Expect your Explorers Quiz at the end of next week!
--

7th grade: I have a very fun Ancient China activity for you to do this week, which will focus on the Shang, Han, and Qin dynasties. (Remember I said we would get through all those dynasties in the next 3 weeks...well, we'll be halfway there on Friday!) We will have only a half class on Wednesday due to the MAP tests (see the schedule here), but it will all work out, I promise! :)
--

8th grade: Are you ready for your quiz tomorrow? Remember, it's no big deal, very short, you may have a half-page of notes with you on the quiz. I am so excited because we are going to start feudalism on Wednesday!!! This is one of my favorite things to read/teach/think about, so I hope you will enjoy it! We will do some ppt/movie stuff this week, and next week (just to get you all pumped up) we will do the hardest thing I will ask you to do all year! (But we'll do it together, so don't worry.)
--

Seniors: Don't forget your newspaper copies on Thursday, and your blog posts are due tomorrow. We will be looking over newspapers in class on Thursday, and on Friday will finalize the pages and their order in the yearbook and make our final page assignments.
--

Everyone, whether from the US or not, thank your lucky stars for freedom and equality.

See you tomorrow!

Seniors: Links for Journalism Comparison/Blog Post due Tuesday, January 17

Hi Seniors:

Here are some links you can follow/use to compare the different types of journalistic styles:
(also, notice the questions I want you to answer in your blog post this week)

Television:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032619/
http://www.whotv.com/videobeta/

Questions: What differences do you see in national and local news coverage? What similarities do you see?
--

Radio:
http://www.npr.org/sections/news/
http://www.whoradio.com/

Questions: Why do you think some people like radio news better than any other form of journalism? Besides the lack of video, are there differences in radio and television journalism?
--

Magazine:
http://www.time.com/time/magazine
http://www.newsweek.com/stories.html

Questions: Magazine subscriptions are falling. Why do you think that is? What is your favorite magazine, and why?
--

Newspapers:
http://www.nytimes.com/pages/todayspaper/index.html
http://online.wsj.com/itp

Questions: Newspapers have been around for centuries: many well-known authors got their start as newspaper writers. Yet, newspaper subscriptions have fallen in recent years, and many smaller papers have stopped printing. Do you think newspapers still have a valid place in society (should they continue to be printed?) What would you advise a small, struggling newspaper to do if they asked your opinion?
--

Online Only:
(these are two news magazines that have never put out a paper copy.
http://www.slate.com/
http://www.salon.com/

Questions: As the Internet (always capitalize the word Internet, please) continues to grow, all news outlets are moving some of their content to the web. You have taken advantage of this today...imagine if you'd had to turn on a radio, watch a television, find a guy selling papers on the street, AND had to go to a magazine store to do this assignment! Yet some people are clinging desperately to the "older" ways of receiving news. What do you think--do you think the Internet is the future of journalism? What is your favorite type of journalism, and how do you prefer to view/read/listen to it--the old fashioned way, or online? Why?
--

Hopefully you will gain some insight into the different types of journalism. Please bring a copy of a newspaper (or part of a newspaper) with you to class next Thursday.

Have a great long weekend!! :)

UPDATES: Mrs. Fink needs to use a calendar! :)

Hello all:

Apparently I need to spend a bit more time reviewing the school calendar, because there are two major things happening this week that I totally spaced on until this morning.

First: Conferences are this Friday, in the afternoon (meaning you children are free to leave at 11:30ish) Letters have been sent home to parents who the teachers want to see, but if you didn't get a letter and would like to come in to chat, I'd be happy to see you. :)

**7th grade and Seniors, this means I will not see you on Friday. :(

Second: **UPDATE to the update** Map tests have been pushed back a week. I will give you more information when I get it. Thank you for your patience and understanding!

Be sure to eat a good breakfast and come prepared to DO YOUR BEST on these tests!!

First full week: January 10-14

Hello Everyone:

I hope last week got you back in the "school groove" and you are ready to continue strongly through this next (first) full week of the second semester!

6th grade: We are going to continue looking at the European Explorers this week, starting with a centers activity tomorrow where we will contemplate just what it was like to be on a ship in the middle of the ocean in the late 1500s. (Not fun, I have to say). We will also look at some of the countries (besides Portugal) who sent out explorers in the 1500s and 1600s.
--

7th grade: Do you know what a dynasty is? You will by the end of this week! We will be studying them for the next two weeks, starting tomorrow with a timeline game and continuing through the week with readings, primary sources, and fun picture-drawing activities!
--

8th grade: I have heard from a few of you, so I know some of you are working on your talking points for tomorrow's debate. Don't worry...if we're having a lot of fun tomorrow we might extend the debate until Tuesday, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. Later this week we will move from East to West and examine the life and legacy of a guy named Charlemagne, and looking at the first split in the Christian church, the Great Schism of 1054. (That might be one of the dates you should know).
--

Seniors: Hopefully you enjoyed your introduction to interviews last week. Remember, your interview write-up is due Thursday. Speaking of Thursdays, from now until the end of the quarter Thursdays will be "Journalism days," where we will look at and create different types of journalism. We will start this Thursday with a look at all them major journalistic forms. Fridays will be "Yearbook days", where we will focus on starting the yearbook and making it the book that you will be excited to carry with you to college next year... :)
--

Hope you all had a great weekend...

By the way, I'm still trying to see who is actually reading this blog, anyway...for a bit of extra credit (for you or your student, depending on who you are) please comment on this posting (might want to include your name or at least initials and school year). You can do this by pushing the "comment" link below, making your comment, then filling in the funny gobbledygook word they ask for (it makes sure you aren't a computer.) Should take you all of 2 minutes.

Thanks in advance, have a great week! :)

Senior Blog Post: First of the New Year!! Due Monday, January 10

Hello Seniors:

I hope you had a nice break, recharged your batteries, and are ready to sprint to the finish of your senior year!

For your blog post this week I want you to reflect on the interview activities we did in class. Think about:

How did you feel while answering the interview question in class? Why?
What was harder, writing or answering interview questions. Why?
What skills do you think you need to work on before having a job interview?
What skills do you think you need to work on before you start interviewing people during our journalism/yearbook unit?

See you next week!

8th Grade: List of (meddling?) Women in History

Hi 8th Grade:

Hopefully you found some good information during class today, and that you keep looking this weekend. I am excited for our debate on Monday!

Just as a reminder, some of the women we talked about today were:
-Theodora (of course)
-Cleopatra
-Eleanor of Aquitaine
-Anne Boleyn
-Catherine of Aragon
-Eva Peron
-Edith Galt Wilson

There are, of course, others.

Please remember, you are either arguing for or against the idea that wives of rulers should not be able to play a role in the governmental policy of their ruling spouse. Remember Theodora's input vastly influenced Justinian's reign in the Byzantine Empire. You are not looking for positive or negative things about the women themselves, just their role in government.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to e-mail me! Looking forward to Monday's debate! :)

7th Grade: Questions (Due Monday)

Hi 7th Grade:

Here are the questions that, along with the map, will be due Monday:

1) PREDICTION: How do you think geography will affect Ancient China? (think about all the elements of geography you find in China...this will probably be more than once sentence)

2) RESEARCH: How did geography affect the people of the Huang He civilization? (5+ sentences=DETAILS!)

3) COMPARE AND CONTRAST: Compare and contrast the Huang He River civilization with what you know about the Indus River Valley civilization. (Hint: we already studied the Indus River Valley civilization.) (7+ sentences=DETAILS!)

E-mail me with questions or if you want me to check your paragraphs.

Welcome Back! January 5-7, 2011

Hello everyone!

I hope you have rested up and are ready to head back to school this week!

We only have 3 days of school this week, but we will still learn some new and interesting things!

(Just for fun, if you have read this I'd love for you to leave me a comment, just to say who you are and what class you're looking at. There may be some extra-credit in it for you...(or your student).

6th grade: This quarter we are going to take our focus from the native groups of North and South America and focus on the lives and motivations of the European Explorers and Colonists in the Americas, and what changed after the revolutions and independence movements in those areas.

For the first week of the quarter we will learn about some of the Europeans who chose to explore the Americas.
--

7th grade: For quarter 3 we are going to move our focus to Ancient China, Japan, and the Koreas. One of the things we will be focusing on is the idea of cultural diffusion. (Don't know what that is? Don't worry...you will :)

We will begin our unit by looking at the geography of China and how it affected some of the early Chinese civilizations.
--

8th grade: I am having a hard time containing my excitement about this quarter in World History!!! This quarter we will be studying the Middle Ages and all the fabulous things that go with it; feudalism, castles, knights, kings, chivalry, lords and ladies, uneducated peasants, manors, etc (and I bought 4 new historical figures over the break!) Be ready to do fun things like; create your own manor, analyze a 12th century document, write and perform a rap, and lots of over things!!!

So, where to start? This week we are going to look at the transition from the major civilization in Rome to the rise of Medieval Europe. It will be more fun than it sounds, I promise. :)
--

Communications: We will begin quarter 3 with something Mr. Fenn and I decided everyone could work on: interview skills! We will spend 2 days working on how to ask people questions (and how to answer questions) in preparation for 1) our journalism unit, and 2) the rest of your lives :)
--

Let's start this semester off strong! I am looking forward to seeing you all on Wednesday (and reading your comments below)!
