Amazing! A 5-Day Week! Week of October 31-November 4

Hello everyone!

I hope you have all enjoyed our last long weekend for a while!

I really enjoyed seeing many of you at the UN Day celebration last Friday! Parents, thank you so much for your dedication in setting up those amazing display tables!! Students, thank you so much for your behavior!! I was very proud to be a Discovery School teacher last week!

The fun will continue this week--tomorrow is Book Character Day for the elementary students and the secondary students are encouraged to dress up in a Halloween Costume as well. There will be a parade of costumes and an awards ceremony at some point tomorrow!

Academically this is a 5-day week full of learning!

6th grade: Great job to all of you for remembering your Maya packets on Thursday! You will need your packets every day this week, so make sure you are keeping track of them! By now you should have pages 1-4 completed. We will work on page 5 on Monday, 5-6 on Tuesday, 6 on Wednesday and page 7 on Thursday. Your Ancient Maya Packet is due to be checked in class on Friday, November 4. (All "Extra Extra" pages and projects are due that day as well.) You will also have a mini-Maya quiz on that day, so come prepared with a sheet of paper with some notes on it. (I will not be posting review questions on the blog as we will have no formal review for this quiz).
--

7th grade: We are now settling into a pattern which I think will hold true for most of the rest of the school year: on Monday you will be reading and answering questions about West-Central Europe in the textbook, Tuesday the students with Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg will all present their projects, Wednesday you will be in the computer lab, Thursday you will be reading and answering questions about Northern Europe in the textbook, and Friday there will be presentations on Sweden, Ireland, and Iceland. BE READY FOR YOUR PRESENTATIONS! Be sure you are including all the elements I have asked you for. Your Europe quiz (to be held on Tuesday, November 15) will include information from the projects, so taking notes might be a good idea...
--

8th grade: Last week you became acquainted with some of the major Greek City-States (ie Troy, Athens, Sparta) and in the last 15 minutes of class were asked to complete a map of Ancient Greece for tomorrow. This is because we are going to be watching a movie during the next three days which will further explain the divisions between these places, and also what happened when the Persians came to call...the movie is called The 300 Spartans (but don't worry, this is not the move 300 that had so much blood and gore. The 300 Spartans is an older movie, but one with a great amount of information about Ancient Greece.) Thursday and Friday will be spent in the computer lab so you can research for your Ancient Greek Life project, which you will find out more about later in the week! (Hint: you will be presenting it to the class on Tuesday, November 8)
--

9th grade: Quiz on Monday! Quiz on Monday! Be sure to see my previous post for some hints on what to study. Don't forget your notes page! After the quiz we will be moving on from the Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment (but don't forget them, because we they will show up again on the final exam in December) to the first country to have a revolution, The United Kingdom. We will spend most of our week looking at the elements that led the English to revolt and some of the major players in this period of history (to give you some idea, the English went through 5 or so Kings, a queen or two, and one Lord Protector in the time we're studying this week.) The English revolution really laid the groundwork for the cascade of other revolutions which occurred during this time (and which we will be studying over the next 6 weeks!)
--

Hope you all have an excellent week!
KF

9th Grade: You have a Quiz Tomorrow!

Hello 9th graders:

As I mentioned to you last Friday before we went and enjoyed the fabulous UN Day festivities, you will be having a quiz during class tomorrow.

As always, you are welcome to bring a notes page (and I would STRONGLY encourage it). One page, front-side only, as per usual.

Although we didn't "review" for this last week, it's not a pop quiz either because I told you about it. :)

To review on your own, here are some things I would look at (we will also have some questions time in class before the quiz)

-Definition of revolution (the one we've been using in class, not from the dictionary)
-Historically based causes of the Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment (think of things we have studied in the past...)
-Major Scientific Revolutionaries and how they changed science
-Major Enlightenment thinkers and what their big ideas were (and what those big ideas meant)
-Salons (not the kind you get your hair done in, the kind where you go to talk and debate)

I, of course, will not be checking off for spelling, but I do need you to be close to right so I know who you are talking about.

Questions? There is a comments section on the blog, you may e-mail me or send an engrade message.

Have a nice day!

Another Short Week! Week of October 25-28

Hello again all:

There is something nice about having many 2.5 and 3-day weekends in October, wouldn't you agree? :)

It was nice to meet or become reacquainted with so many of you during last Friday's Parent-Teacher conferences. If you were not able to come and would still like a meeting with me, please feel free to e-mail me at kfink@discoveryschool.edu.hn.

Reminders:
Wednesday, October 26 is a half-day due to a teacher in-service day. Please arrange to have your child picked up no later than 11:45 am on that day. We will run according to the AM schedule.

Friday, October 28 is also a half-day due to our UN Day festivities. Please feel free to join your student for the UN Day activities. More information is posted on the Discovery School website.

Although it's another short week, we will be having lots of fun and learning in room #4!

6th grade will continue its study of Ancient America by beginning an activity packet about the Maya. This will be the first of three packets they will complete over the next quarter, and each packet is designed to be done together, in class. Please do not encourage your student to work ahead in the packet. The exception to this is pages labeled "Extra Extra!" These pages are designed as extra credit; we will not be doing them in class together. In an effort to conserve paper, each student will be given only one packet: they will not be given a second copy if they lose the first. This packet will be due Friday, November 4.
--

7th grade will continue working with the geography of Europe. They will spend one day reading the textbook and two days working in the computer lab on the Europe country project.
--

8th grade will continue looking at the different city-states of Ancient Greece by finishing the activity they started last week.
--

9th grade will continue looking at the Enlightenment with a 5 W's of the Enlightenment activity and salon discussions.
--

Have a great week!

Short Week: Week of October 17-21

Hello everyone:

I hope you had a really great weekend!

I know I did, because I had a great birthday sendoff from my 8th graders!! :)

Thank you! :)

Now to this week:

There was no school yesterday (obviously :) and there will be no school for students on Friday. This is a change from what the official school schedule says, but please be aware there will be no half day of school on Friday. Instead, the whole day (8-3) will be dedicated to student-led parent teacher conferences. Please make arrangements to bring your student to talk to any/all of their teachers during this time. If this time is not convenient for you, please contact your students' teachers to schedule a conference time.

Academically:
6th grade will be focusing on the Olmec Civilization. They will have some history and art projects in order to underscore some of the major elements of civilization of the Olmec.
-

7th grade will start looking at the 5 elements of geography, human and physical geography of Western Europe. This week they will be working on their map skills in this region.
--

8th grade will begin looking at the Ancient Greek culture. They will begin with a quick overview of the major Persian leaders, then move on to the geography of Ancient Greece.
--

9th grade will begin looking at the scientific revolution as a part of their greater revolutions unit. They will simultaneously be looking at the enlightenment.
--

It's going to be a great week!

9th Grade: Absolutism Review Questions (+ Answers)

Hello 9th graders! Here are your absolutism review questions!

Please remember that you are allowed to bring one page of notes (only one side with writing, please) to use on the quiz. You are NOT ALLOWED to simply copy and paste these questions, nor to directly copy them. You need to re-write any notes you bring in your own words, and not in question (answer) format like I have used below.

If you do come with your notes in this format you will not be allowed to use them on the quiz.

1. What is absolutism? (form of monarchy in which political sovereignty and government power are located in a monarch who rules by divine right without any checks or balances)

2. What is divine right? (idea that a leader’s power is given by God, they are responsible only to God)

3. What is the balance of power? (nations keep themselves at the same level of power as other nations to avoid war)

4. What is a dynasty? (ruling family which passes power from one generation to the next because of divine right)

5. What countries did we study that had Absolutist rulers? (England, Spain, India, Russia, France)

6. Is the following an example of an absolutist ruler? Why or why not? In 1689 King William and Queen Mary became the monarchs of England. Before they were crowned, they accepted the English Bill of Rights which required the monarchy to work with Parliament to govern the country. The monarchs were required to regularly call on Parliament to meet and lost their power to suspend laws. The responsibility of coordinating the countries finances and power to tax were given to the lower house of Parliament, known as the House of Commons. (No—they have checks and balances, right to rule was given by people, do not have political sovereignty)

7. Is the following an example of an absolutist ruler? Why or why not? According to the Mandate from Heaven, the right to rule China is granted by Heaven. The Chinese believed that since there was only one Heaven, there could be only one ruler. Chinese emperors that were part of the Han dynasty referred to themselves as Sons of Heaven, and commanded respect from all their subjects. Chinese law dictated that the emperor’s position could not be challenged by anyone. Emperors handpicked governors and officials in order to centralize their authority and spread their power. Each emperor served as head of state and commander of the army. They chose whether or not to listen to advisors, but had no legislative body to monitor imperial power or prevent abuse. (Yes—power given by god, no challenges to their power, did not have to listen to their government)

8. Name one of the 3 critical attributes of absolutism (Rule by divine right, political sovereignty, no checks and balances)

9. Name one of the 3 critical attributes of absolutism (Rule by divine right, political sovereignty, no checks and balances)

10. Name one of the 3 critical attributes of absolutism (Rule by divine right, political sovereignty, no checks and balances)

11. Name one negative thing about Louis XIV (lived well while others suffered, misspent government funds, persecuted protestants/those who disagreed with him, was not well liked by those below him)

12. What is political sovereignty? (centralized (all with ruler) control over all aspects of the government, including economy, war, domestic and foreign affairs)

13. What are checks and balances? (governmental bodies put in place to stop the ruler from having unlimited power)

14. Who was Shah Jahan, and was he an absolutist ruler? Why or why not?

15. Who was King Phillip II of Spain, and was he an absolutist ruler? Why or why not?

16. Who was Catherine the Great, and was she an absolutist ruler? Why or why not?

17. Who was James II of England, and was he an absolutist ruler? Why or why not?

18. Name one positive thing about Louis XIV (builder, helped merchants, made country catholic, France had Golden Era when he was king)

19. Who was a better ruler, Louis XIV or Peter the Great? Why?

20. Does Machiavelli say it is better for a ruler to be loved or feared? (feared, although he felt both were ok)

21. Do you think it is better for a ruler to be loved or feared? Why?

22. Do you think Peter the Great was more loved or more feared? Why?

23. Describe what life was like for Absolutist Monarchs (good, could do whatever, spent money however they liked, were never alone, always had people trying to get them to do things)

24. Describe what life was like for the people who lived under the rule of an absolutist monarch. (bad, no food, could gain favor with the King or queen—depended on where you lived)

25. Would you have wanted to be an absolutist monarch? Why or why not?

Extra credit opportunity: Use the comments section below to leave information about the Absolutist Monarch you researched for the in-class role play!

-We have a new Discovery Mascot! The students voted last week and we are now the Discovery Wolves!

-MAP tests are officially over, but if you were absent for any of your tests the past two weeks, you need to be sure you make them up on Tuesday, October 4!

-Quarter 1 ends NEXT FRIDAY, October 14! Grades will be available on Friday, October 21, just in time for Parent-Teacher Conferences that same day!!

Due to Monday's holiday and Friday's Opera visit, it's going to be a short week:
6th grade: We will continue learning about the Ancient Americans by shifting from the Clovis to the Mississippians and the Anasazi. On Tuesday you will present your Clovis Filmstrips to the class, and on Wednesday-Thursday we will be working in the computer lab on group research projects. Friday our class will be cut short due to the Opera visit, but any remaining time will also be spent in the computer lab. Also, I apologize for changing this so many times, but I promise (barring unforeseen events), your Ancient Americans quiz will be Wednesday, October 12!
--

7th grade: Please remember both your physical and human geography packets for South America are due on Tuesday! We will spend Tuesday discussing these packets and working in the classroom on your country projects, and Wednesday-Thursday working on the projects and map skills in the computer lab. We will not have class on Friday due to the Opera visit, however, your country projects are due for presentation on Monday, October 10! We will spend the rest of the week reviewing and you will have your Geography of the Americas quiz (including country identification and general information) on Friday, October 14.
--

8th grade: Remember that both your Ancient Egypt packet and the in-class activity questions are due on Tuesday! We will spend time discussing them in class, and then will spend the rest of the week working on group research projects which will be presented to the class on Monday, October 10. Your Ancient Egypt quiz will be on Thursday, October 13.
--

9th grade: Don't forget your Louis XIV assignment is due on Tuesday! We will spend time discussing it in class, then turn our focus to Peter the Great. On Wednesday-Friday (a short time only on Friday before we leave for the Opera) we will spend time in the computer lab working on an Absolutism webquest. Your Absolutism quiz will be on Thursday, October 13.
--

Looks like another great week!
