8th Grade Mesopotamia Review Questions (+ Answers)

Hello 8th graders:

Please remember that you are allowed to bring one page of notes (only one side with writing, please) to use on the quiz. You are NOT ALLOWED to simply copy and paste these questions, nor to directly copy them. You need to re-write any notes you bring in your own words, and not in question (answer) format like I have used below.

If you do come with your notes in this format you will not be allowed to use them on the quiz.

1. Name and give information about one Ancient Mesopotamian civilization or kingdom we studied in class (Sumer, Akkadia, Babylon, Hittites, Kassites, Assyria, Chaldea, Phoenicia)

4. Name and describe one of the reasons for the fall of Mesopotamia (war, weather, irrigation)

7. What is the difference between the fall and the end of a civilization? (the fall begins when the society is no longer the most important in the area, the end is when it ceases to exist)

8. What is a ziggurat? (Temple built by the Ancient Mesopotamians to honor their gods)

9. Name one of the elements of a civilization and explain how Mesopotamia had that advancement (Agriculture, Architecture/City Building, Warfare, Art, Language/Writing, Laws, Trade)

13. What does Mesopotamia mean? (land between the rivers)

14. Between what two rivers did Ancient Mesopotamia begin? (Tigris and Euphrates)

15. What was a scribe? (person who wrote down what the king/queen said)

16. What was a cartwright? (person who made carts)

17. What was a diviner? (person who studied omens and divined (explained) them, helped the king make decisions based on religious omens)

18. What was a tanner? (person who made leather using the brains of an animal to “tan” the hide of that animal into leather)

19. What was a vizier? (person who advised the king or helped the king make decisions)

20. What was a herald? (person who traveled around the kingdom bringing news to the people)

21. Who was Hammurabi and why was he important? (Mesopotamian King, created first written code of law)

22. What was the basic reasoning behind Hammurabi’s code? (an eye for an eye, the punishment must fit the crime, write the codes out so people will know what the consequences for their actions are)

23. Why was a cup bearer a good job to have in Ancient Mesopotamia? (you had close proximity to the King, you could ask for special favors, etc)

24. In what present-day country was Ancient Mesopotamia located? (Iraq)

25. Which Mesopotamian society invented irrigation, and how did it affect Ancient Mesopotamia? (Sumeria, see above)
