9th Grade: Age of Exploration and Colonialism Review Questions (+ Answers)

Hello 9th graders:

Please remember that you are allowed to bring one page of notes (only one side with writing, please) to use on the quiz. You are NOT ALLOWED to simply copy and paste these questions, nor to directly copy them. You need to re-write any notes you bring in your own words, and not in question (answer) format like I have used below.

If you do come with your notes in this format you will not be allowed to use them on the quiz.

1. Name one Viking “first” (explore N. America, bring women/women explorers, European baby born in N. America, European to die/be buried in N. America, European to trade/fight/kill natives, colonize N. America)

2. How did the Age of Exploration change the Americas? (destruction of civilizations, new language, customs, religion, diseases, goods, colonized, etc)

3. How did the Age of Exploration change Africa? (extension of slavery, peoples spread unwillingly all over the world, increased warfare among the natives)

4. How did the Age of Exploration change Asia? (new language, customs, religions, more opportunities for trade and commerce, colonized)

5. Why did explorers explore? (gold, God, glory, adventure, trade routes to Asia, etc)

6. In which direction did the Portuguese sail to find Asia? (East)

7. Who was Henry the Navigator, where was he from, and what is he known for? (Prince of Portugal, from Portugal, known for opening naval academy)

8. Name one Spanish sailor and explain his route (Magellan, Columbus, Conquistadors)

9. Name one French sailor and explain his route (Cartier, LaSalle, etc)

10. Name one English sailor and explain his route (Pirates, Cabot, Raleigh)

11. Name one Dutch sailor and explain his route (Hudson, Jantzoon)

12. Name one Portuguese sailor and explain his route (DaGama, Dias, Vespucci)

13. What was the reasoning behind Christopher Columbus’ first voyage and was he successful? (wanted to find an easterly route to India, no in this reasoning)

14. What is a Joint-Stock company? (a company where people put in their own money to a company, they share the risk of the company)

15. Did Christopher Columbus have a more positive or negative impact on history? Explain your answer. (varies)

16. Who discovered Australia? (Jantszoon)

17. What country was the first to explore, and why? (Portugal, because they were a coastal country, wanted more trade, knew Africa already)

18. What was the Line of Demarcation and who created it? (told Spain and Portugal which way they could sail to reach the Indies, Pope Leo III)

19. What was the outcome of the Treaty of Tordesillas? (Spanish sail West, Portuguese sail East)

20. What would you consider the most important thing traded on the Columbian Exchange, and why? (varies)

21. Name one item that traveled from the Old World to the New World on the Columbian Exchange. (diseases, sugarcane, grapes, cows, pigs, etc)

22. What were the three sides of the triangular trade system? (Europe traded manufactured goods to Africa for slaves, Africa sent the slaves to the New World, where the slaves grew raw materials to be sent to Europe to be manufactured OR Europe sent manufactured goods to the Americas, the Americas sent rum to Africa, Africa sent slaves to Europe)

23. What was the importance of rum in the colonies? (rum is a by-product of sugar production, was traded for slaves and manufactured goods)

24. What was the Columbian Exchange? (a transfer of goods. Goods that had never been seen before in one “world” but were commonplace in the other “world” were taken and transplanted.)

25. Name one item that traveled from the New World to the Old World on the Columbian Exchange. (tomatoes, cacao, corn, turkey, etc)
